Public and private sectors

The Swedish labour market is split into public and private sectors.

  • **Public sector**: state, regions and municipalities. Funded by taxes. Examples include health workers, teachers, child carers, police and firefighters. About 30 percent of workers are in this sector.
  • **Private sector**: all privately owned companies, from shops and restaurants to factories and service firms. About 70 percent work here.

Large cities have many service and trade companies. Smaller towns often have industries close to raw materials.
