Democracy means rule by the people

Democracy is a political system where power comes from the people. The word comes from Greek and means "rule by the people". In a democracy, citizens can shape decisions, and those who hold power can be replaced through elections.

In Sweden, people have the right to vote in free elections. Free elections mean that everyone with the right to vote has one vote, that there are several parties to choose from, and that nobody is threatened or forced. Elections are secret. People also have the right not to vote.
