The basic laws

Sweden's basic laws are harder to change than other laws. There are four:

  • **The Instrument of Government** – states that all public power comes from the people. It describes how Sweden is governed and guarantees basic rights and freedoms.
  • **The Freedom of the Press Act** – protects free expression in print, such as books and newspapers.
  • **The Fundamental Law on Freedom of Expression** – gives the right to express opinions in radio, TV and other media. Everyone may also form associations and demonstrate.
  • **The Act of Succession** – decides who becomes the next king or queen.

Free speech is protected, but some statements are illegal, for example defamation, agitation against a group and hate crimes. Spreading information that could harm Sweden's security is also forbidden.

The Right of Public Access is protected in the Instrument of Government. It gives everyone the right to be in nature, even on someone else's land.
